The Capitoline Museums, written in plural because it is composed of two buildings with several galleries. They were created thanks to two bronze statues that the pope Sixto IV donated to the city of Rome in 1471.
As we said, the Capitoline Museum is composed two buildings in the Campidoglio Square, these are the New Palace and the Conservators Palace joined by the Lapidary Gallery, which passes the Square by a subterranean tunnel.
The Campidoglio Square is one of the oldest of Rome’s modern art, created by Michelangelo thinking it was oriented to the St. Peters Basilica. In order to give harmony to the Square, he designed in the middle of the two Palaces an enormous bronze statue of Marco Aurelio riding his horse, an identic copy of the original, shown in the Conservators Palace.
The New Palace, designed by Miguelangel but made by Girolamo Rinaldi, shows copies of the authentic sculptures of the Greek; one of the more well-known is the Capitoline Venus, made during the years 100 and 150 d. C.
In the Palace of the Conservators we can find The Pinacoteca, with a great collection of busts and paintings of artists such as Tintoretto, Tiziano and Caravaggio. There you will see one of the main attractions of the Capitoline Museum, the Capitoline Wolf, which according to the roman mythology, when Romulo and Remo’s mother knew that King Amulio ordered to murder everyone who could be his successor, she threw his kids to the river and a Wolf picked them up and raised them as her own, this is the reason why there is this statue.
Public access is allowed until one hour before closing time.
There are free tickets for children under 6, groups of students and mobility reduced people and their companion. For people in wheelchair, there is an access by Via delle Tre Pile, 1 and the Portico de Vignola.
