The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. Before being a cathedral it was one of the most beautiful and important basilicas of the city. Nowadays, the Pope celebrate inside it the offices of the holy Thursday as bishop of Rome.

Before being a Basilica it was property of the noble roman family of the Laterani, they dead during Neron's rule and their properties passed into hands of the imperial domain. After that, the properties passed into hands of Constantino I, who was the first emperor that gave freedom of worship to Christians, allowing that a Basilica was built next to his properties. When they won the battle of the Milvio Bridge in 312 a.c. its construction started.
Over the years, the church suffered an earthquake in 846 a.c which destroyed Rome and some fires. However the city was rebuilt, the old structure was conserved, ald also the cloisters and the baptistery, which was fully rebuilt.
Until 1870 a.c., the pontiffs were named Popes of Rome in the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Nowadays, it still having an important role, the Pope celebrate inside it the offices of the holy Thursday.

You also can access to their usual masses at 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 and 5:30 p.m. In festives are celebrated in the papal altar at 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:30, 12:30 y 5:30, these days only can be visited the lateral chapels.

The address to arrive to the Basilica of St. John Lateran is Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano 4. You also can arrive there by bicycle or walking, by tram, subway or bus.
Sleeveless shirts or shrits with neckline and short trousers are not allowed. Remember that shoulders and knees must be covered.
Arround the Basilica you can see the Scala Santa, marble stairs with 28 steps, in this stairs Jesus climbed to be tried in front of Poncio Pilato in Jerusalem. The Cloister of St. John of Lateran, in which stand out its columns with spiral shape and the colorful mosaics in marble. The Baptistery of St. John Lateran, is the oldest in Rome, with octogonal shape and in the middle the green basalt baptismal font with details in bronze.
You also can see the obelisk located in the square and the Sancta Sanctorum, in the top of the holy stairs, this is the private chapel of the Popes.
